FAQ's

Fabric Advisory

Please note the minimum order amount at butefabricsltd.com is £1. Any orders under this value will not be processed by our website provider.

The end of line fabrics featured on butefabrics.com are discontinued and/or end of line fabrics from our Bute Fabrics collection so there may be subtle imperfections in appearance, however, this will not affect the overall usage or aesthetic of the fabric.

We aim to describe and photograph our products as accurately as possible, however due to the woven nature of our fabrics, your product may vary slightly in appearance to that shown on the website.

Fabrics available on our shop may have any of the following quality issues:

  • Weaving faults

  • Colour variances

  • Finishing variances

  • Vegetable matter contamination

Meaning the fabric was not suitable for a first line sale, however this is reflected in the price. All end of line fabrics are non-refundable.

Care & Maintenance Guidelines

What is FR?

FR or flame retardant is a chemical substance that is added to materials during the manufacturing process to both reduce the likelihood of the finish product catching fire and slow down combustion.

What are Martindale Rubs/Cycles?

Martindale is a unit used to measure the abrasion resistance of textiles. A rub test is a method of assessing the durability of a fabric. Our fabrics have Martindale rub measurements listed in the product description.

Lightweight –  -50,000 rubs

Mediumweight –  50,000 – 100,000 rubs

Heavyweight –  +100,000 rubs

What is fabric pilling?

Fabric pilling is when small balls of fibres form on a piece of fabric due to abrasion. Pilling normally happens on parts of the fabric that receive the most abrasion, but this does not interfere with the functionality of the textile.

Size Tolerance

On our product and fabric pages there will be a size indicated (W x H) for each individual product. Due to the characteristics of natural fibres and the range of finishing processes our products go through, please be aware there may be up to a 5cm difference in the sizes specified.

Where are all your products made?

All our fabrics and products are made at the Bute Fabrics mill in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. The mill was founded in 1947 and now offers a wide range of products and fabrics to clients globally. For more information about the mill please take a look at our story on the main menu.
